Just a note that plastics use much more energy than most simple minerals for their production. Plastics are hydrocarbons. As there is very little hydrocarbons on Mars, the source needs to be water, and separating water into hydrogen an oxygen is one of the most energy intensive processes that exist. That is why the reverse reaction, oxidation of hydrogen in rocket engines, is one of the best propellant combinations possible.
